Entrance to Themed Village

Vigan is 90 kms. south of Laoag and only 2 hours away by bus. 2 hours turn you to about 5 centuries back to the 16th century through its heritage- themed village.

Heritage has its price. A boutique hotel in Laoag published room rate is over a thousand a night while a modern heritage styled hotel in Vigan is over two thousand.

Common between the two cities is the widespread use of a language that is distinct, rich and with a heritage, Ilokano.

Ilokano binds the people in whatever city, town or region; it is the primary means of communication across income classes. Values like the language are intact. The people remain to be respectful of others, humble, thrifty, industrious and calculatingly aspirational.

The landscape at the centro particularly in Vigan is aesthetically pleasing in daytime more so at nighttime.

Ilocos Norte and Sur. Love its language, values and the landmarks. Conveniently, this experience is only 8 hours away from Manila in landlocked Luzon. There are no entrance fees to pay.

Agyamannak Ilocos. Dios ti agngina kenka.

Ti Ayat Ti Maysa Nga Ubing

Ti ayat ti maysa nga ubing
Nasamsam-it ngem hasmin
kasla sabong nga apag-ukrad
iti bulan ti abril

Ti ayat ti maysa nga lakay
aglalo no agkabaw
napait, napait,
napait nga makasubkar

This Ilokano folksong resonated in my subconscious since childhood days. Repeatedly heard from the elders, in regional gatherings and on radio sang by the Mabuhay Singers, the melody and the lyrics stuck.

In Vigan this 4rth quarter 2019, I exerted effort to re-learn a language I did not learn to speak fluently and have not spoken in decades.

I wanted to converse in Ilokano to connect.
Directed to "manong, manang, ading," when asking for directions I ask "Ayan na ti  . . .?" When inquiring for a price, "Mano?" Greeting someone, I start with "Naimbag na aldaw." Checking on bus schedule, " Anya oras ti byahe ti Cubao?" Saying thanks, "Dios ti agngina."

The language is sacred to the Ilokanos. Speak their language and you can quickly engage with them. Speak with sincerity and it opens up the possibilities of their heritage.

When the Partas bus enroute to Manila reached Dau terminal, I was surprised to have quickly turned around, "Tya magkano ya pu?" The need to adapt.

Batangas Port, gateway to the islands South of Luzon

Batangas Port is a two-hour bus ride from the Cubao bus hub. (This excludes the North to South EDSA swing.)

Certified as an international port, measures are in place to regulate flow of people and goods. Security protocols are followed. Entering the complex is like entering a military camp though at times security is lax.

Buses from Metro Manila disembark right at the parking area leading to the ticketing area. Likewise, arriving passengers from other islands just walk to the parking area with direct destination via STAR Expressway to Cubao, Pasay, Alabang and at the airport.

Port controls ships, ferries, ROROs, large motorized bancas schedules. Montenegro, 2Go, Ocean Jet, FastCat are among the prominent companies awarded with franchises.

In the advent of advanced communications, one at the very least expects information on departures, arrivals, availability posted real time. Websites are down, cell phone numbers are not updated, Messenger chats are not replied to within acceptable time necessitating one to physically check out just for these at the port.

Imagine this inconvenience to those on multiple journeys. While other facilities are in place, processes are broken most of the time.
No wonder during peak travel hours as Holy Week, Christmas, elections, long weekends, days with  turbulent weather, local news broadcast bottle necks, congestions, unexpected cancellations and long waits.

My simplest workaround as an intrepid traveler is to establish a local mole stationed at the port to secure information. With confirmed data, that's the only time one moves from Metro Manila to SLEX to conveniently be at the gateway to the islands with a confirmed seat hours not half day or a day before departure. It also spares me of unnecessary travel and outrage.

We almost had it all but . . . We could be rolling in the deep

Which cover of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" relays the message of  "sana tayo na pero may pagninilo (pagtataksil) ka!"?

We almost had it all! But . . .
